Warren Benjamin (Claremont/WA) – Draft Profile

Height: 187.3cm
Weight: 84.8kg
Preferred foot: Right
Role: Inside midfielder
Potential: 6-7.5/10

Strengths

> Very explosive off the mark – pack splitting/line-breaking pace to bust open a stoppage - big vertical leap
> Very hard at the footy with a very powerful and lean physique – very good ball winner in tight
> Clean ball use by hand
> Very good defensive work ethic and a hard hitting, effective tackler
> Goal kicking midfielder – effective at pushing I50 – kicks goals from stoppages
> Good aerial presence and ability

Weaknesses

> Fades in and out of games – not a consistent ball getter and lacks an engine to be more than a burst player at this stage
> So-so balance despite such a strong build
> Not routinely clean with his disposal by foot – timing often appears off
> Not routinely clean with his ball handling and control

Other

> 2008 Claremont colts B&F
> WA U18 squad but didn’t play any games beyond the trials
> Senior experience at WAFL level in 2008, but looked very much out of his depth – 2 games for 6 possession altogether
> Clinton’s brother

Overall

Tall, explosive, goal kicking inside midfielder is just about as sexy as you can get when describing a potential draftee. While Benjamin has that collection of attributes in his arsenal there are just as many critical weaknesses that exist. Certainly a worthwhile project if at least a few of those can be ironed out, but not a high probability one.
