Hamish Shepheard (East Perth/WA) – Draft Profile

Height: 193.8cm
Weight: 81.2kg
Preferred foot: Right
Role: Outside 3rd tall utility
Potential: 5.5-7/10

Strengths

> Clean hands at ground level and very good ball control on the bounce
> Good user by hand – good vision, clean and quick execution
> Can play effectively at both ends of the ground – has kicked bags of goals for EP, while also playing defence with effect at both colts level and under 18 championships

Weaknesses

> Lacks pace/explosiveness off the mark – tries hard but loses better opponents too easily in defence and doesn’t have breakaway
> Skinny and weak – physically underdeveloped and gets pushed off it a bit too easily
> Struggled to impact at U18 national level
> Doesn’t win enough of the football

Other

> Decent agility – has the ability to by himself more time and space in traffic
> Reasonably reliable OH mark – but visually looks and plays smaller than listed height

Overall

While Shepheard has some fans, he doesn’t stand out as a prospect to me. Against better opposition I’ve struggled to notice him and while he has versatility, but the ‘what role?’ question continually comes up. I don’t think he has the attributes to hold down a key position, but he could potentially be a rangy 3rd tall utility with a couple of year’s development behind him, however I’m certainly not brimming with confidence.
